Dentrix setup

Dentrix doesn’t expose a perio-chart API, so SmileMaxer drives it the same way a clinician would: by typing values and pressing Tab. The first time you set up a practice, you record SmileMaxer’s “macro”: a one-time capture of your chart-entry order.

Before you start

  • You’ll need Dentrix open with a test patient’s perio chart.
  • Don’t use a real patient for the recording. Use the built-in test patient or a deliberately fake one.
  • Allow ~5 minutes for the recording.

Record your macro

  1. In SmileMaxer Desktop, go to Settings → Dentrix → Record macro.
  2. Click Start recording. SmileMaxer fades into the background and watches your keystrokes.
  3. Switch to Dentrix, open your test patient’s perio chart, and walk through it the way you normally do: enter values, press Tab or arrow keys, etc. Use whatever order is natural for your practice.
  4. Switch back to SmileMaxer and click Stop recording.
  5. SmileMaxer analyzes the recording and tells you what it captured. If anything looks wrong, redo the recording. It’s quick.

What SmileMaxer captures (and doesn’t)

SmileMaxer records the navigation pattern: the keys you press to move between cells. It does not record the specific numeric values you typed during the recording. Real chart entries are produced from what the clinician speaks through the paired phone.

If Dentrix updates

If a Dentrix update changes its keyboard shortcuts or perio chart layout, SmileMaxer will detect the version mismatch on next launch and prompt you to re-record the macro. ~5 minutes, same flow as the first time.

Safety rails

  • SmileMaxer will only type when Dentrix is the focused window. Click anywhere else and it pauses immediately.
  • A small overlay shows Typing into Dentrix (Esc to abort) while values are being entered. Press Esc anytime to stop.
  • The clinician’s phone shows each value before it gets typed, so they can catch mishears before they hit the chart.
