Open Dental setup

Open Dental is our cleanest integration. We talk to its HTTP API directly, so there’s no keyboard automation involved and no macros to record.

1. Enable the Open Dental API

1. In Open Dental, go to Setup → Advanced Setup → FHIR.
2. Enable the FHIR / HTTP API.
3. Generate an API key for SmileMaxer (don’t reuse a key that another tool already uses).

2. Configure SmileMaxer

1. Open SmileMaxer Desktop on the operatory computer.
2. Go to Settings → PMS.
3. Choose Open Dental.
4. Enter the server URL (usually http://10.0.0.5:30222 or similar (your IT knows it).
5. Paste the API key.
6. Click Test connection. You should see the practice name come back.

3. Pair the phone

1. Open the PerioMaxer app on the phone (iPhone or Android).
2. Go to Settings → Connect to SmileMaxer Desktop.
3. Scan the QR code on the desktop screen.
4. The desktop will show Paired with [your phone’s name].

4. Chart

Open a patient in Open Dental, navigate to their perio chart. From the phone, set missing teeth and start charting. Values appear in Open Dental as the clinician speaks.
